Historical

Since 1994, television audiences in Romania are measured by scientific methods. By 1998, the market has used television audience data based on completion of the consumers of personal diaries. Between 1998 and 2003 two companies competed on the audience measurement market using electronic devices (peoplemeter) installed in some households.

Starting with 2001, a group of TV stations, advertisers, media and advertising agencies have decided to establish Romanian Association for Audience Measurement (ARMA) in order to provide its members with impartial, precise and objective information on the audience of the Romanian mass media, their characteristics and performances.

In 2002, the Association was involved in writing the content of the Law no. 504/2002 on the audiovisual regarding the procedure for the selection of the National TV Audience Measurement Services (S.N.M.A.TV) provider.

In 2003, the representatives of the Association were designated in the Paritary Committee in charge with the tender process for the selection of the National TV Audience Measurement Services (S.N.M.A.TV) provider, starting with 2004, according to the provisions of the Law no. 504/2002 on the audiovisual.

Since 2004, all ARMA members recognize and accept only the data provided by the Romanian Association for Audience Measurement.

The Association is the contractor of the S.N.M.A.TV and is the owner of the copyright on the data obtained from S.N.M.A.TV.

In the period 2004-2007 SNMATV WAS PROVIDED measured by TNS AGB International S.R.L., a company which is a local merger between TNS and AGB Nielsen Media Research. From 01.01.2008 SMNATV is provided by the company GfK Romania SRL until 31.12.2011.

In 2006, the representatives of the Association were designated to be part of the Paritarry Committee which is in charge with the tender process for the selection of the National TV Audience Measurement Services (S.N.M.A.TV) provider, starting with 2008, according to the provisions of the Law no. 504/2002 on the audiovisual.

In 2010, the representatives of the Association were deignated to be part of the Paritary Committee (COMPAR) which is in charge with the tender process for the selection of the TAM service provider, starting with 2012.

From January 1, 2012, the TAM service will be provided by Kantar Media Audiences.

The Association monitors the way S.N.M.A.TV is provided, so that its members and advertising market obtain valid data regarding the TV stations performances.
